Over 100 businesses will gather in Iowa Central Community College’s Career Education Building Wednesday to meet and talk with potential future employees at the Spring Career Fair.
No pre-registration is required, but there are many things attendees can do ahead of time to make the best impression.
Iowa Central’s Career Services Coordinator Jessica Kavanaugh said both students and the public are welcome and should come prepared.
“People should bring their resume, prepare their elevator pitch or their introduction, and dress to make a great first impression,” she said.
Kavanaugh said when attendees walk in, they will check in at the registration desk where they will receive a name tag and directory of all the businesses with a map of the booths.
“I would say we have a pretty good variety of businesses in the region,” she said. “Something for all of the different trades in the area.”
The list of businesses planning to attend includes companies recruiting people in a large variety of fields such as nursing, radiology, agriculture technology, carpentry, engineering, mechanical technology, accounting, business, welding, criminal justice, marketing, sales, and many others.
Kavanaugh said even those who aren’t certain what field they’re interested in would benefit from attending the career fair.
“The employers are more than happy to visit with individuals and talk about their companies and the different types of positions that they have available,” she said. “You can walk around and talk to the companies and see what positions they have and if anything interests you.”
Kavanaugh said she feels it’s a great event for both people who are currently looking for work or those who just want to make new connections.
“It’s a great opportunity,” she said. “It’s a great resource. Employers are looking to hire and as we know, employers are hungry right now. So it’s definitely something worth your time to take advantage of. It’s a great opportunity to network and to make those connections so when you do need them, you already have that relationship started.”
The fair will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Career Education Building on the main Fort Dodge campus. Iowa Central holds one career fair in the spring and one in the fall each year.
